Windows 98 Keeps Crashing On Tape Backup

Hi again,

I just tried to do a tape backup of my system and Windows 98SE keeps crashing on me about 3/4 the way through the backup. Any suggestions?

Part of the reason why I'm backing up now is because I have a problem with my startup in Windows . If I'm backing up because I plan on reinstalling Windows, should I concentrate on backing everything up on tape except for Windows?

I don't know how this works. Can I backup everything on tape except for Windows, reinstall Windows and then do a restore with the tape backup?

TIA,

Sal

If you're looking to format your HD and reinstall Windows, you probably only need to back up the files that you'd like to save (your documents, spreadsheets, MP3's😉, etc).

It likely won't be any use backing up your applications; generally they require System Registry entries and other files that are going to be lost when you format your HD. You're better off reinstalling from disk after you finish installing Windows.

I'm not sure why your tape drive is having trouble. If it's happening at the same point during every attempt, maybe there's something wrong with the tape you're using. Do you have another tape you can try?

Well.. I just tried a different tape and I'm getting a different problem. First try, the tape rebooted my system and during the second try it gave me an error message saying that either the tape or drive are faulty or dirty. This is a 4 month old drive and fairly new tapes that worked perfectly prior to my problems with Win98.

I think my problem lies with trying to install new hardware drivers because I couldn't get a USB device to work. I removed the EIDE drivers at one point and let Windows rebuild them. I probably need to reinstall the software for the Seagate tape drive. Do you think this would help?

Also.. If I'm having a problem with buggy drivers, will a reinstall of Win98 help or do I need to fdisk and start from scratch?

Thanks again,

Sal

Hmm. As far as reinstalling the tape drive stuff, give it a try. It's pretty tough to guess what the problem might be, but it sounds like it must be software related.

If it's your windows drivers that are paining you, maybe you don't need to reinstall Windows. If you go to the device manager and find the "PCI Bus" you can remove that, which will remove everything else along with it. After that, you just need to reboot Windows a few times while it auto-detects and reinstalls all your drivers. (Make sure you have your Win98 and driver disks on-hand to make things easier). This generally works like magic for me.

Give that a shot -- if you still have trouble, maybe the best idea is to fdisk/reinstall.

I think knocking out the "PCI Bus" in Device Manager did the trick. Thanks! I just made sure that I kept the older drivers when Windows was rebuilding them.

My computer successfully cold booted this moring for the first time in a week.

Thanks for your help RedFox1!
