I have a Nvidia Geforce 440 MX and yes it's old but not that old. The drivers will not work with XP properly - so i cannot run the game - Age Of Mythology.

Okay, so now, being the smart ass that you are, you will say: it's probably something else, and not the drivers.

Well dumb ass, i've spent 3 hours on the phone to Microsoft and after trying, installing, downloading, patching, updating absoluntly everything the game still will not work on XP.

But the game does work on windows 98 with the same video card, drivers, hardware etc.

So everything points to it being the drivers not working on XP!

It's a bug with Nvidia - XP - and playing the Age Of Mythology game.

So therefore, i was trying to get the RAM to work on 98 so i could play the game on 98 with less lag.

OK?

Damn - some ppl are retarded!

Ok, I see your point. You don't have a THAT crappy of a video card BUT are you saying that the Nvidia drivers you install don't work at all or is it that they don't work with that particular game? I remember when I had a Rage 128 Pro card and I wanted to play MS flight 2004 despite being within the requirements, the game would have missing textures. Asked MS about it and they could do nothing despite having the latest ATI drivers, so I ended up getting a new video card.

Windows 98 does have support 1GB of memory and will use it well, not as well as XP but it will still improve performance. The only problem is the easily fixed issue of the cache taking all of the available memory if the vcache setting in system.ini is not used to limit it 512MB or less.

That was what I was going to suggest next (Last sentance). Well is not the correct term when you say how will 98 work with 1GB of ram. 98 sucks at ram period because of all the memory leaks it has (not as bad a 3.1 but still bad). Clearly 98 doesn't do a very good job at handling over a gig and I think MS says it doesn't support over 512MB of ram because it ain't workin on his system.

The nvidia drivers dont work with my card and XP. So i use my win 98 hdd to play the game. And i wanted to put more ram in my machine to make the game faster.

I have spoken to Microsoft - turns out there is close to nothing you can do about it.

Guess ill have to buy a new video card for my XP machine.

More ram won't make it faster. With the amount of nvidia drivers available suprised none works. The game is
XP compatible. Try 40 series drivers. Check guru3d they might have those older drivers.. 66.93's should work as well.

Thats the main reason I stopped buying geforce cards. Too many older gaming issues that I could never resolve. Not that ATI doesnt have their share of problems but with nvidia cards I had to install too many patches for too many games and they never really fixed the issues. I am interested in the 6800 series but I still play older games and dont feel like taking a chance.

Honestly, the MX 440 is a REALLY common card. The GPU on the card is pretty much the same as the integrated graphics on the nForce 2 IGP mobos, which wound up in a crapload of lowend/midrange Athlon desktops from HP, Compaq and eMachines. Unless SP2 or the newer Forceware has broken something, I'm really suprised that the card doesn't work with the AOM under XP. I've played AOM before with a GeForce 4 MX 440 under XP SP1, so I personally know it at least USED to work.

A few questions:

- When you uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers, did you go through and wipe out all the traces of the old drivers with Driver Cleaner or Detantor Destroyer before you reinstalled?

- When you said you reinstalled and updated everything, did that include the chipset drivers (and most importantly) the AGP drivers?

- Did you have your antivirus disabled when you installed the drivers?

No, no and yes... to answer your questions.

1. I did not wipe out the old drivers. I will see if i can do that now. How do i do this exactly?

2. I installed the chipset drivers then installed SP2. So i will go and reinstall the chipset drivers again. With the AGP drivers... i have an Aopen motherboard and the aopen website does not have an individual driver for the AGP slots?

3. Yes. I dont have antivirus software installed.

Let me know?

this service pack here : http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html
will handle the ram problem along with others, also gives 98, a 2000 like look
take a look at it in the least, it is third party, but I have used it and it works quite well

you also specified the game won't work on xp according to drivers, can you be more clear, what does it do? or not do?
