I just purchased two sticks of 512mb of RAM - ddr400 - which is the right type for my motherboard.

I installed 512mb and it worked fine. But, when i install both sticks of ram bringing it to over 1 GB
windows 98se hangs.

I get this error message:

*************************
Windows Protection Error

An internal stack overflow has caused this session to be halted.

Change the STACKS setting in your config.sys file and try again.... bla bla bla.
*************************

I think this error is caused because win 98 cant handle over 512mb of RAM.
Anyone know how to change win 98 to recorgnise the 1GB of ram i want to put in.

P.S. Please don't tell me to get windows XP, i have it, but i want 98 to work with this ram too.

Thanks!

Did you check the specs on the mobo to see if the memory slot would take a 512 stick ??

PS (don't switch to XP unless u have too)

To warn Windows 98 that you have more than 512MB of memory installed, add the following line to the [VCache] section of your win.ini file: MaxFileCache = 524288.

Why are you installing windows 98 on a machine with that much memory anyway?

Because a game i own wont work on my XP machine because nvidia does not update their stupid drivers.
The nvidia drivers dont work with my card and XP. So i use my win 98 hdd to play the game. And i wanted to put more ram in my machine to make the game faster.

I have spoken to Microsoft - turns out there is close to nothing you can do about it.

Guess ill have to buy a new video card for my XP machine.

No, just make this simple addition to Windows 98 win.ini file and it will work.

Thanks. But are you sure that you change the win.ini file?

I checked the win.ini file, but it does not have any [VCache] section like you say.

Are you sure you don't mean the system.ini file - which has a [VCache] section?

Anyone else know?

Sorry, you're correct. It is the system.ini, just been a few years since I last worked with Win9X.

Aquire XP and install XP. There is litte reason to even have a gig of ram for such an old OS.

Simular situation I have. I actually have an old PPro system with DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.11 to play some old dos and windows games that just wont work on my main system. I even have 2 voodoo2 cards SLI'd in it for my old dos/Windows voodoo 3d games.

Thats why I stopped using my old copy of Win98SE. You don't need to stretch your $100 that far. Get a WinXP Home for $100 from most good vendors.

That's great advice! Are you seriously suggesting an 8-year-old OS is superior, or are you just trolling?

Windows 98 doesn't support over 512MB of ram. It has too many problems with over 512MB of ram, SOL really.. There are some fixes for over 512MB but they don't really solve anything (Look for something like Vcache or something).

That makes absolutely no sense. If you have a card from nvidia where the drivers don't work in XP (likely below Riva128) then there is no point in adding more than 512MB of ram because the card is so old it can't play games that utilize that much ram...

Listen dick head, don't tell me i don't make sense.

I have a Nvidia Geforce 440 MX and yes it's old but not that old. The drivers will not work with XP properly - so i cannot run the game - Age Of Mythology.

Okay, so now, being the smart ass that you are, you will say: it's probably something else, and not the drivers.

Well dumb ass, i've spent 3 hours on the phone to Microsoft and after trying, installing, downloading, patching, updating absoluntly everything the game still will not work on XP.

But the game does work on windows 98 with the same video card, drivers, hardware etc.

So everything points to it being the drivers not working on XP!

It's a bug with Nvidia - XP - and playing the Age Of Mythology game.

So therefore, i was trying to get the RAM to work on 98 so i could play the game on 98 with less lag.

OK?

Damn - some ppl are retarded!

lol warning you migjht get flamed for that being u have 6 posts and are giving other users crap lol. I did a dual boot of win98 and xp for a whiel for my voodoo 5 since games sucked in xp for a while with it, however, with my nvidia cards i've bought since then everything's worked perfectly for the most part, however I still have an old machine with windows 98 on it simply for the purpose of any old games that come alone and being able to have them work.

Windows 98 does have support 1GB of memory and will use it well, not as well as XP but it will still improve performance. The only problem is the easily fixed issue of the cache taking all of the available memory if the vcache setting in system.ini is not used to limit it 512MB or less.
