Windows 98 FDisk

OK, I know this is ooooold news, but I'm about to go insane and could use some help. I have a fairly new computer with an 80GB HD in it, it was a Win 2000 computer, I am changing it over to Windows 98. I wiped the hard drive, and now I am attempting to fdisk and format it. Windows 98 is seeing it as a 10GB HD, which I expected, but after 4 hours of working at it, I can't get it to see the correct size. I went to MicroSoft's site to get the fix (here), that doesn't work. I found this site (here), that didn't work. I've gone through every diskette I had from the good old days when I was a tech and fixing this problem every freakin day, nothing is working. Anyone know why, or have a solution to this problem?

Does this HD have a drive overlay on it? The BIOS on the MB may not be capable of seeing this siize of drive. Check the jumpers on the HD some have a jumper to limit the size of the drive,

Try downloading the Disk Manager / disk tool from the hard drive manufacturer. I tried using the MS replacement fdisk on a 120 GB drive and it did not work.

No, it's the same MB that the drive was on when it had Windows 2000 on it.

I'd really rather not use an overlay program if I can avoid it, I've never liked those things. It's just driving me crazy that I spent 4 hours trying to do this, and as far as I know it should work, but it doesn't work. Windows 98 was THE operating system back when I was a tech, but I can't remember how large HD's were at that time. I do remember dealing with this problem back then.

Manufacturer disks (at least some) offer formatting separate from installing overlay software. Try it.

Try using Madboot, it has two different tools for partitioning drives over 80 GBs.


If you downloaded the updated version of Fdisk, it will also can partition drives over 80GBs(not really sure what the limit is, but it will do 80 GB drives).

Any idea where I can find this updated version of Fdisk? I tried the version from Microsoft, and two other versions I found online, none of them worked.
