Windows 98 and Secondary IDE controllers

It does work, since I just installed 98 off the CD.

But in Device Manager, it gives an Error 10, and doesn't show the CD drive as being present.

WTH gives?

Some PCI controllers have trouble with optical drives in Windows, could be that.

I've used Promise controllers since the 486 / DOS days, but only for hard drives.

I'm thinking it's software, since XP works just fine with it. But not only is it way too old for XP (and has no valid license, I just wanted to test it) it's supposed to be a backup 98 PC so that my little bro can play his older games. 🙂

Since you installed from the cd, the hardware should be OK. You could easily check with an "Ultimate boot CD". If this is win98se a rollup of updates and drivers is available at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html that may even include some Mobo drivers. I use Ver 1.6.2 with success.

Was the error for the secondary PCI controller or the CD? When I encounter errors in device manager, I always delete and redetect the item. You may have to delete the whole PCI bus and allow everything derived from it to redetect .

What Mobo and chipset. If it's VIA mine were always picky about which chipset drivers were used.

I hope there's some help in here somewhere.
