Windows 98 and IE6 SP1 problems

Hi all,

I know it's an ancient OS that should be ditched a long time ago, hey but it's my boss's home computer so I can't tell him that!

Anyway, his kids were mucking around on the computer and had managed to do some damage to IE and of course the kids has no idea what they did. To cut a long story short, he is somehow unable to browse the internet at all with IE it would come up with a page not found error. However, his outlook would work perfectly.

So I gave him a freshly downloaded copy of IE6 SP1 to install at home. After doing the repair option which I told him to do. Now he's able to browse the web but at a very slow rate! Sometimes returning the page not found error. He goes through some sort of router and no other machine on his LAN are experiencing any net surfing problems.

Short of a reformat what could I tell him to do? Or what could I do if he brings me the machine?

Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response MrChad. We've already scanned for virus with latest defintion from Symantec plust AdAware scan and nothing turned up. I don't see how adaware can have an effect on IE performance to the point where an ADSL connection can have slower performance than a 56k.

You could go to Tools->Reset Web Settings in IE, then reinstall all ADSL drivers. The router might play a small part in this, but I don't know what his kids could've done to the router.
