I get the following message:

The following file is missing or corrupted:

windows\himem.sys
dcrom\mtmdai.sys
ifshlp.sys

CANNOT FIND WIN.COM
UNABLE TO CONTINUE LOADING WINDOWS

C:\>

I tried to use F8 to get into safe mode. Does not work. I tried to do a SCANDISK at the C prompt. Does not work. The computer belongs to my secretary and she does not have a BOOT UP Disk. Also does not have Windows 95 CD.

Suggestions?????

You might want to try replacing those files in DOS: win.com, himem.sys, mtmdia.sys, ifshlp.sys. But really you are probably going to reinstall Windows.

that isn't exactly minor... but press F8 and instead of safe mode, do "command prompt only" or "safe mode command prompt only". Then try and copy those files to a floppy from another computer, and then to this computer. However, given the files that are missing, if a malicious program (virus, worm, trojan) did it then most likely the rest of windows is toast... you'd have to reinstall it.

Or, if you have an Antivirus program, you could create rescue boot disks and load them to see if there is a virus on your computer. But, you will have to copy the files from the install CD to replace them.

Or, check the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to make sure that it includes the WINDOWS directory along with C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND and the directory that has your CDROM drivers.
