When starting Windows 95 a friends computer will load past the first Windows screen and then display the following:

The windows registry or system ini file refers to this device file, but the device file can't be found or no longer exists. If you still want to use this device reinstall the application.

It then lets you past by pressing and key but the a fatal exception occurs.

I have tried to reinstall windows (from floppies!)and get the same thing.

This is an old Deskpro 50m, that is owned by a gentleman that uses it for email and word processing only. He can't afford to upgrade but would really like to get this one running.

Any help would be greatly welcomed.

When you say reinstall, do you mean just simple copy over of Windows or a complete reformat? I would first recommend that you completely reformat then slowly go about installing drivers etc, making sure no devices are conflicting. If the problem is present from the very first boot up, I would think that something may be wrong with the disks.

Thanks Tharyn I guess that's what we'll have to try. What I'm wondering is because the bios is on the hard drive, will I have to reinstall it also?:(

While running the diagnostic test that Compaq provides I am get memory errors. Could this have some thing to do with it?

Thanks again.
