Hello, I'm doing a windows 95 to 98se migration, and a windows 98 to 98se upgrade. Will I lose my preferences? Lose my third party software? Lose my network settings?

Thanks for reading...

Why not 95 straight to SE? Just do the upgrade from within Win95....you keep your settings and your programs. Not the best way to do it.....I always recommend a clean format when you change OS's to make sure there is minimal junk floating around....but at least you don't have to re-install your other programs again.

Its two (er, actually about 15) different machines, some 98, some 95 that all need to be 98se... And I don't want to reinstall a bunch of software, set up the fax/file/print/email/http settings on each client (for Novell, win2K, linux, and winNT servers), or trash everyones customized desktop, or have to backup gigs of documents, saved emails, spreadsheets, etc if at all possible.

if they are all similar machines, you should be able to make a basic install of windows then use some disk cloning software to just copy that over to cut down the install time of everything. you would have to reinstall tho

Is there any disk cloning software that you would reccomend? Thanks.

Oh, and I agree about a clean install being best, that's why I've never done the upgrade route, and why I am asking this rather newbie question.

Oops, sadly a lot of the machines have different hardware, from PII 266 to PIII 550, ATI, Riva, voodo0 grapics, 15 gig SCSI to 2 gig IDE, vast array of NICs, etc.

Just to let you know, I did 2 PC's on Thursday with the 95 to 98se conversion...One went flawlessly...:)

The other, well, lets just say I would have been better off formatting and starting over:|...Lost all installed programs, internet explorer and internet connection, Outlook, Office, and my AS400 connections, not to mention the network loss. Took me 10 hours to get most of it back...Works ok now, but d#mn, what a pain...

Good Luck!
