Windows 8's softer fonts/images

I've upgraded a VM in my computer to Windows 8 (W8) to see if I like it. We've also gotten some machines (unimaged) that I got to play with while waiting for my own machine to be handed back to me. I've noticed that the fonts on both machines are softer. Messing with the cleartype setting does nothing. Any way to turn this off in W8? My main machine has W7 and I've never encountered this before. When you lower the resolution the fonts just get fuzzier. I think they're non-vector. The issue is program/font-independent.

Make sure you are using the best video driver for your specific monitor in regular and VM snd not the generic Windows PnP driver.

How come it's the same thing for a brand new laptop as well? They both can't have bad drivers.
