Yea, I saw that. I don't believe it. MS has said they want to be on a 3 year release schedule, and that's sooner than 3 years. July 2011 for a beta maybe, but not RTM.

Definately BS. Windows 7 has been very successful for them so far, they have no reason to be in any rush to put out the next version.

Money?

Look how much trouble they were/are in with XP because people get comfortable with the OS.
At the same time it strengthens their stranglehold on the OS market.

Microsoft would LIKE to put out major OS releases every couple of years, but I think they are going to see a lot of backlash from both consumers and IT support folks if they keep up with the release rates of the past couple of years. Very few consumers or businesses want to update their computers every two years. Especially with the way the U.S. economy is going to be for the next five years.

I like to see a 3-4 year cycle on new Microsoft OS,2 years or less then you are really rushing it and bound to be plenty of bugs, there will always be users that like to upgrade ie those that upgrade hardware and like to try new OS often, however Microsoft have to be realistic and aim for the main users that prefer to wait awhile rather then upgrade ASAP.

I'll be honest here, if Microsoft did release it in 2011 I would try it out of curiosity, however I would still prefer 3-4 year cycle.

I believe they're going to follow the same schedule they've been following so a release sooner than people expect shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

I'm hoping 7 becomes the next "XP" in the sense that it becomes the standard that pretty much everybody uses and it remains as such for about as long as XP was.

I can't remember where I read it, but I saw where they wanted a 3 year release schedule, and wanted to alternate major and minor releases. If they keep to the schedule, Win8 should be a major release, and Win9 should be minor(similar to Vista-Win7)
