Hello, when Microsoft had the promotion on discount to upgrade to Windows 8 a few months back I was issued a upgrade key. I installed Windows 8 but then reformatted and reinstalled Windows 7. My question is, how can I install windows 8 using this key again. When I run the upgrade assistant it says the key is not valid. Is there a way I can use this key for a clean install? Thanks.

Call the 800 number. They will correct it. First ti e after new MB, CPU and add the guy from india logging into my PC and a few restarts later had it fixed. Then a month later I forgot I never installed media center. I activated it for. My email then got an error to call MS. That time I just had to input the ID code and type in what the automated system said. All good since.

If you bought the upgrade you got the download link and your product key in your email didn't you? Where it says: "If you need to to download Windows, write down your new product key and enter it here", when you click "here" it downloads "Windows8-setup.exe" to the location you choose.

Are you saying that when you double-click Windows8-Setup.exe, and enter your purchased product key, that it's telling you the key is not valid? (I'd just re-downloaded Windows8-Setup.exe about ten minutes ago to test this).

Not only should your key be valid; you have the option of creating an ISO image after the files download completes. As for your installation options; this is straight from the readme file:

Should I choose Upgrade or Custom install?

Choose Upgrade if you:
· Want to keep Windows settings, personal files, and applications in Windows 8. Not all Windows settings and applications will be moved. If you’re upgrading to Windows Server 2012, no applications are kept.
Choose Custom install if you:
· Want to delete everything on your PC.
· Want to install Windows 8 on a separate drive to multiboot into other operating systems.
· Don’t have an operating system installed on your PC.
· Aren’t able to upgrade from the version of Windows that’s already installed on your PC.
If you choose Upgrade, make sure to do the following before you continue:
· Back up your files to an external hard drive, DVD or CD, USB flash drive, or network folder.
· Find the installation media and installers for the applications that will work and need to be reinstalled in Windows 8.
· If you use a fingerprint reader or another biometric device to sign in to your PC, make sure you write down your password. You’ll have to type your user name and password the first time you sign in to Windows 8.
Note:
· Your personal files will be moved to windows.old folder.

Thanks! I'll call that # when I'm ready :p

I can't find that email when I made the purchase!

When I run the Windows8-Setup this is exactly what is says: "The product key you entered is an upgrade key and can't be used to install Windows 8."

I'm cool on Windows 7 though! No problems whatsoever. Is it worth it to upgrade now? I may have not liked it much when it first was released, but is it more stable now? I kind of like the look of it to compared to Windows 7, so I guess there's another reason heh.
