Windows 8 to 8.1 via stand alone exe rather than store?

Is it possible to just download an exe file from Microsoft in order to upgrade Windows 8 to 8.1 or is it only available via their store? It will never be made available from Windows Update?
 
Nope, only via the store.

Microsoft has made a tool that enables you to download any edition of Windows 8.1 so you can perform a clean install. Nothing beats a clean install for Windows 8.1, if you upgrade, you may encounter a lot of headaches

Also ensure you get Windows 8.1 Drivers for your computer as not all Windows 8 drivers are compatible with 8.1
