Well, looks like MS answered my question today
Price for all versions goes up quite strongly in 11 days.
So now this is a super hot deal
http://www.tweaktown.com/news/27971/windows_8_pro_price_to_increase_by_400/index.html

As far as Vista and no O/S already installed, I am sure Vista will work, as will XP Sp3 for X86 and SP2 for X64. Virtually anyone could install an activated XP today. And you could install XP SP3 X86 and change to 8 X64 during install.

Just to clarify;

Windows media center key is free before 1/31/13, but you need to order it from a activated Win8 install prior to 1/31/13, and the WMC key is tied to the Win8 key?

MS is doing this carefully, its a targeted push to put Win8 into the hands of people exactly like ourselves, nerds. Nerds who then talk about Win8, help other people with issues, find bugs and accurately report the issue, etc etc.

The massive upgrade market is gone. There just isn't that much of an improvement, XP and Win7 are not full of bugs and hard to work in, or even obsolete beyond the direct actions of MS to make them obsolete by dropping support, no DX11 or whatever.

At $15 my only questions are will I ever really use it, and is it worth the trouble of installing W8 temporarily as I have no system that needs a new OS, but when I do its certain I will want WMC and not want to pay more to add it later.

*** Funny, while typing this out I started thinking, wait a minute son's system won't support the DX for the new Assassins Creed he got for Xmas ... Maybe I do need to upgrade his system, which makes me think I should do two ... Can't let the boy outpace me. ;)

I registered to get the code. But still haven't bought it. I mean I have a perfectly good win 7 and from using 8 on rc1 this almost seems like a good way to light $15 on fire. 10 days to decide I guess . I only buy laptops so they always have an os. So I guess from Microsoft's perspective giving upgrades away even for free doesn't cost anything since it displaces an older license anyway

Come on guys, do I really need to be lecturing you about how committing fraud is not a hot deal? The $15 is only for people who purchased Win7 PCs since June 2nd, and the $40 offer is for people who have legitimate copies of Windows. If your idea of legitimate commerce involves lying about the above, then this is the wrong forum for you

Please point out the post or posts that you're referring to, because, offhand, I don't see anyone encouraging anyone to lie in order to receive these promo deals. What in this thread do you have a problem with?

Got this msg from the moderator...

Dear Yazoo,

You have received a warning at AnandTech Forums.

Reason:
-------
Advocating Fraud

Yazoo, this is advocating fraud, plain and simple. You must own a legitimate copy of Windows 7 to take advantage of the $40 offer, and you must have a newly purchased PC to use the $15 offer.

-Thanks

I don't see it as fraud and i won't be posting anymore hot deals on this forum. Long live censorship.

You know better than to do this.

I purchased mine in Aug, why would anyone be in this thread otherwise?

The original post offered instructions on how to abuse the system to purchase a copy of Windows 8 without having met the requirements, and then to use it as a full copy instead of as an upgrade as intended. It also contained references to using it to upgrade an illegitimate copy of Windows 7.

You're using the wrong word. Whether or not you see it as wrong has no bearing on whether the law sees it as fraud. Long live removing posts that can get Anandtech sued.

The program you download when you sign up checks your system if it is elegible or not. If for some reason it allows it to work when it shouldn't that is their own liability, not the OP's.

It's the equivalent of all the "wrong price posted" hot deals that get posted here all the time. If MS does'nt like it they can invalidate the keys.

No, I don't think it does. It checks to see whether the hardware is (roughly) compatible.

But I believe that there's more than a little bit of truth in that. Microsoft is essentially giving away the software and not being terribly strict in worrying about who can upgrade, in the hopes of padding their numbers and propping up their stock price.

for HTPC users - keep in mind that MCE isn't part of Win8 any more - you have to get it in addition as a pack with another activation that you can get for free for Win8 Pro till 01/31/13 and activate by that day

Tell me about it...... wish hp had windows 7 on my sleekbook so that i could upgrade.

wait how is it not fraud. i mean you aren't going to go to jail for it i'm figuring, but you are still misrepresenting yourself when you register for it like that. the act of doing it would be fradualent. i'm pretty sure the definition of fraud is basically what that woudl be, even though it would be really minor fraud.

The OP specifically said this was for upgrades only, I didn't see anywhere he was advocating fraud.

Yes, the OP was redacted by Virge. The OP told the method how to get this upgrade using a modified BIOS.
