Windows 8 - initial apps?

So its been a while since I performed a completely clean install of a OS but I remember back in the day there was an essential list of programs you'd want to install to ensure functionality...

Programs like... VLC, Java, Flash, PDF reader, WinRAR, Office...

But now.... it seems as though you tube and other flash sites operate with new HTML which doesn't need flash? I just installed windows 8 on a virtual machine and youtube works without installing any extra plugins or software....

Java has huge security issues and I would prefer to not install that, but I want to ensure maximum browser/system compatibility...

So guys/gals what would you recommend in this new day and age... I am sure that many of the programs I would install by default in windows xp days no longer apply to windows 8...

I just install stuff I use, VLC, utorrent, and games
there are no "essential" programs that need to be installed, it's up to the end user, and what they use their computer for.
