So last week I built my first gaming rig and installed windows 8 pro. After installing it and downloading all my games and steam I wanted to change my background. So I go to activate windows 8. But it says I bought an upgrade version only. Keep in mind I did a clean install. So I try to get a code to use from Microsoft but they can't do anything. So today I'm getting windows 7 so I can upgrade to 8 but I don't know if I need to uninstall 8 then install 7 and reinstall 8 after? If anyone could help it would be appreciated.
 
Odd, I used an upgrade key as well on an clean install dvd (msdn image), it installed perfectly fine with no fuss.

Does this only happen if you did a complete install first? I thought Windows 8 prevented installation without keys now?
 
I don't know why it doesn't work. But I got windows 7 for free so I'm just going to uninstall 8 then install 7 and upgrade to 8.
