Windows 8 bootime video..DAMN

It's easy to boot up quickly when you don't shutdown. If you read the blog that goes with it, they mention that they're not actually shutting down the kernel, just userland processes. Once that's done the rest is sent into hibernation on disk (which may not be as fast as a proper shutdown). So all they're really doing is making hibernation the new shutdown.

Also, what's the big deal about these theoretically fast boot times when you then have to wait for dozens of back-ground processes and services to initialize?

My Win 7 i5 2500k overclocked and SSD drive c:

Takes 15 sec. to the Mobo to boot up (has nothing to do with the OS).

Then 15 sec. to Win 7 to provide a full ready to work desktop.

Do you think that I really care if it the OS part would be 5 or 10 sec. shorter???

😎

maybe not for you, but for me and others who don't have SSD this would help. I love anything that speeds up the boot process, personally.

OEM systems are normally much quicker to POST, which means the OS is the bottleneck.

with SSD, i'm just fine with cold boots on W7. 17 seconds is the longest average it takes. Though on a tablet, i expect instant on and ipad does just fine in this regard.

I hope there is a way to set it to boot to the traditional desktop. Metro doesn't look very practical for desktops and workstation setups.

This is the core issue for me. It does no good if the OS boots fast while I have to wait for things like license servers, background processes to initialize, network drives to show up, etc.

What I want to see them do is not load the desktop, but load the desktop and start opening applications. See how fast they can boot to desktop and browse a network share.

its integrated, you can swap from one desktop to another. it appears the start menu is what performs this function though i'm not 100% sure but both desktops are more or less, one and the same unless something changes by release.
all the built in ms apps are now written in javascript and html

boot quicker? who cares? fix windows so it doesn't need to reboot after installing drivers/programs and win updates then it'll be something worth mentioning

not sure if thats possible with a security hardned kernal.😕

well they are improving, even though it's not perfect. ideally there would be almost no reboots needed. this month i didn't have to reboot after the month's updates so that was nice.

Win 8 is quite quick with an SSD or without. Starts faster and shuts down quicker. Timed vs Win 7. IE10 seems much faster also, but without empirical comparison.

Have not had one single crash or hang using 8 on several computers. Pretty amazing for a pre beta.

I don't care how quckily it loads or boots windows. What counts is how fast it processes data when executing.
