I think they learned a lot from vista, especially regarding the timing of windows releases. This is probably going to be their most important is release to date because of the tablet computing hype. Miss it and they could be screwed... big time

Tablets are soon to be replaced by ultra-books.

In which case they still have an efficient OS that will perform better on those slower devices. Plus it means they'll be touchscreen-ready when someone realizes you can slap a touchscreen on an Ultrabook and use it as both a laptop and a tablet.

This doesn't mean Win 8 will be a success, but it's not some poorly thought out monstrosity. Microsoft has a good chance of getting it right here.

I was thinking the same thing.

Except that it does mean win8 will be the turd part of the turd sandwich that is the MS-OS pattern of OSes.

lot more images on winbeta site, looks like that is going to be build number virge
From WinBeta: "One thing to note, however, is that even though this is build 8220 and it clearly states "Consumer Preview", this might be a beta candidate build."

Windows 3.1-1992
Windows 95-1995
Windows 98-1998
Windows 2k-2000
Windows ME-2000 (Home edition of windows 2k)
Windows XP-2001
Windows Vista-2006
Windows 7-2009
Windows 8-2012

Aside from 00-01, MS has been on a fairly consistent release cycle. The timing is nothing new.

Actually, Windows ME is NOT a "home edition of 2k". It's based on the Windows 9x kernel and NOT the NT kernel like Win2k.

I meant that more towards its features. ME, built on to what 2k already brought to the table. I was aware that its based on the 9x kernel.
USB improvements
Better Firewall
Introduced System Restore
Image Acquisition API (better communitcated with Cameras, scanners and such
Introduced Windows Movie Maker
Windows DVD player

Then of course XP took these and put it on the NT kernel

Steve jobs must be laughing his ass off (in his grave) at how ugly the UI is. Why would anyone want to use this without a touchscreen (or even with one)? It's like they took media center, made it super ugly, and decided that's the best interface for a desktop computer a with keyboard and mouse.

I agree. Just for good measure they throw more Ribbons in there too just in case it's not awful enough.

I have beta tested every version of windows since win2k, but for the first time I don't feel like reinstalling windows on my desktop just to test out this OS. Pretty sure people will hate the new interface and it will be the next Vista.

However, that doesn't mean nothing good will come of it. A lot of the improvements in Windows 7 first showed up in Vista. I'm sure the whole metro UI will be improved and windows tweaked to allow better crossover between touchscreen devices and tablets.

I'm sure this will be all sorted out by Windows 9. It's possible feedback from the beta might get things sorted out by RTM of windows 8 but I doubt it.

I used the developers preview on my netbook and it was awful. I hated the UI and none of the metro programs worked on my netbooks resolution. Seems like a pretty stupid limitation that will hopefully be fixed.

It works surprisingly well with mouse and keyboard on the latest DP build.

What does Jobs know about success in the PC landscape anyway? :p

I'll be skipping Windows 8 just like I did with Vista. Windows 7 is so solid I don't see the point in Win8 for a desktop system. I'll wait for Windows 9. :)

Same here, and I have even more motivation now that I've learned they are implementing that horrible ribbon interface from Office right into Explorer.

You minimize the ribbon so that it functions like it does now.

See the "up" button beside the forward and back buttons
