windows 8 and usb problems.

is it just me or is win8 weirder about usb than vista/win7?

I noticed that I couldn't get my android phone working on win8 where it worked on windows 7 (stupid mtp mode - rather have UMS but anyway). it shows in device manager as cdc serial, MTP and Samsung_android. all under "other devices".

I removed the equiv of infcache.1 from vista/win7 (sys32\config and delete the drivers files) which made a removable flash drive work again on it but no joy with my note 2. I found an article on TechNet about uninststalling the controllers/hubs and rebooting/reinstalling and trying again. now I find that usb devices don't install by themselves. they show as not installed in dev man and I have to go in and choose to update driver for them to be installed. would have done it automatically in win7

anyhoo, this didn't work for the phone. I've installed kies (didn't work) and a separate Samsung usb driver installer - also no joy. after this I get an error saying it found drivers but couldn't install them.

my phones a note 2 and worked fine on win7 but won't on win8. wth!?

help please? 😳
 
tried again and now it shows as just Samsung_android. no MTP etc

You tried all available USB ports on your PC?.....btw I have an Android Tablet (10.1") and Sony Smartphone(Android) ,USB works fine on them with my Win8 x64,using native default Win8 USB drivers.
 
yea, probably the 3rd time i installed them 🙁

they must be installed though otherwise win wouldn't see them though right? somethings going funky somewhere.
 
ok, tried messing around with the bios options but nothing changed that i could see. xhci options- smart auto, auto on/off. ehci (no idea). backwards compatibility etc. nothing i changed made a diff - bar making my mouse/kb work in the EFI screen but not work at all in windows. grrr
