Windows 8 accessing files on network without sharing files on PC

Hi,

I recently set up a new router (NETGEAR AC1750 R6400-100NAS) and hooked up a USB drive to the router to use as a media center. That seems to be working fine with various computers, media players, phones, etc.

I have 2 computers running windows 8.1 with the following settings.

Turn on network discovery
Turn off file and printer sharing
Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers

Both are seen on the R6400 network and can be accessed from each other.

It shows Network> Laptop > Users > Showtime > Contacts/Desktop/Docs/Downloads/Favs/Links/Music/Pics/Searches/Videos

I can access files from each computer when they should be private. I didn't set up a homegroup. I don't believe I allowed access between the 2. I'm hoping it's something simple that I overlooked, but it seems strange that windows would default to sharing like that. What settings will allow me to access the media server without sharing the individual computer files over our network?

TIA
