Hi all,

I'm beginning to redo my WHS 2011 and I'm thinking it may be a good time to transition off of WHS.

Right now, I use WHS to:

-Back up my Windows 7 machine
-Backup Macs (through network drive time machine)
-Stream videos to my HDTV
-Transcode videos to my iPad through Air Video
-Directly connect to the network drives through SMB (windows and mac)
-Auto sleep/wake via LightsOut

Am I able to do all of this using Windows 8?

Some of that article is blocked out. I just need to know if its possible, then I can determine to go through with the install. After the install I can figure out how to configure it on my own.

Backups explained here - http://www.howtogeek.com/123713/how-windows-8s-backup-system-differs-from-windows-7s/

AFAIK Lightout for Win 8 is in Beta.

There is other ways mean time to achieve similar function in Win 8.

examples.

The rest of your concerns is not an issue.

If you want to have a very close setting as WHS you have to spend $500 on Windows 2012 Essentials.

You also might want to ask over in the Operating systems forum. Your questions are not really "networking" related. You might get a far better response over there.

Short answer: Yes, you can do all of those things with Win8. There's some slight differences in the config, but the functionality is there.
