So, I already had 8.1 and installed the 900 mb "spring update"
On Anandtech they showed what appeared to be a screen shot of the new start menu but it's nothing like what I am getting.

Here's what shows in the Anandtech story:
qVlB72R.jpg

I can't show you a screenshot of what I have because I can't figure out how. When you left click the new start button you get a floating screen of some metro apps.

Am I missing a setting to make it perform like the pic above?

Thanks

that will be coming in Windows 8.1.1.2 which is in a few more months.

Microsoft is trying so hard to make this OS work like a "normal OS" and have failed at every attempt so far.

I am using the final version (clean install) from the MSDN ISO of Windows 8.1.1 and I can tell you this, it is one buggy update. Desktop Icons freeze for the first minute upon restart, icons go blank/white for a while, all apps are forced to run as administrator, sometimes if you click no when asked if you want to run, explorer.exe just freezes....just to mention a few

:)

I always have Fast Startup disabled as well because take for instance, I shut down my computer to install a 2nd drive or simply want a full shut down. Fast start up is more like a hibernation, so when I install that 2nd drive and boot up, it doesn't detect it until I do a restart.

Additionally, when I shut down, I want to fully shutdown and flush everything from the memory, I don't want no freakin' hibernation

SSDs are fast as heck anyway so it doesn't really matter for me if I hibernate or shutdown, both are super fast to start

regarding the issue I just mentioned, to prove to you it's not just meh, check this thread:

Yeah, I got confused about that too when they where talking about it during the BUILD keynote. It is coming in a later update, it could be next or the one after that, they never really specified

I did believe you in your first post ,I have mine boot to Metro Start anyway rather then old desktop UI,but as I stated happy with my Win8.1s on my two PCs,I could also say I'm happy with my Linux PCs as well so 4 for 4 :) .

Also I've no desktop icons on my old desktop UI since I like it clean (my ex-Win7 was the same way) so just a few on taskbar .

yeah they'll probably need Windows 8.1.2.3.4.5 until they get this half baked OS to work properly, and what's worse, is they stopped offering customers updated ISOs so people could download the OS that has all the updates pre-installed.

When I contacted Microsoft, then I chose option 9 to get help with Windows 8.1 Download, I got a d00d who was telling me the only way to get Windows 8.1 is to install Windows 8 that I had originally, then update to 8.1, then update to 8.1.1! Wow! that is one messed up method, because updating from 8 to 8.1 like a whole OS reinstallation it's not a simple update, it takes 5 times the time you need to do a clean install (preparing your system...percentage time....reboot....preparing your system again...percentage timer....reboot....just a few more things.....wait....die waiting....hold on...let me mess with your brain again....final touches....wait more...die....then just when you thought this is over.....installing your apps.....preparing to start..bla bla blabla......finally on the desktop after 1 hour and that's on an SSD) , and leave you with a Windows.old folder in C:\

They only have 12 months or so to get it all sorted since Win9 is due April 2015 or sometime in 2015 so that will open up a whole new can of worms depending on how buggy Win9 is on release.

ISO thing yeah I don't know why Microsoft don't do that, most of us legit users are downloading from various sources online just to have the option for a clean 8.1 /8.1 update 1 ISO etc.

nice one Microsoft... advertise feature that is not there yet (was there since 1995 and went missing)

Anything else positive from the update?

yes, free bug, steer away. Personally, I find that Windows 8 is much better than 8.1 and 8.1.1

just my 2 cents worth

Windows 8.1

That was the first thing I noticed. Nice one MS. Next they will be resetting your homepage on all your browsers. MS has really lost their eye on the ball. Just keep pissing on their customers.

Essential making it more kb+mouse friendly like it should have been from the start
show taskbar and menu bar in metro apps, allow metro apps to be pinned, power button on start screen are just some of the top of my head

Plus it is a rollup of all previous updates as well

Shows a few videos of some of the features

Microsoft has withdrawn Windows 8.1 Update 1 from its Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) platform over reports that it causes client systems to ignore future patches, even as it warns that machines without the update will be left behind at the end of the month.

A major update for Windows 8.1, previously codenamed Windows Blue, Windows 8.1 Update 1 adds a number of enhancements and improvements to Microsoft's flagship operating system. Many of these address criticisms regarding the user experience, which many still claim is weaker than Windows 7 when used on a device without a touch-screen display. Although some enhancements are being held back for future release - in particular the reintroduction of the Start Menu, dropped in Windows 8 in favour of the tile-based Start Screen - it's considered a major update for the platform.

It's major enough, in fact, that Microsoft is mandating its installation: computers running Windows 8.1 without Update 1, the company has advised, will cease receiving updates at the end of the month - including critical security updates. Those who want to remain protected, then, are gently encouraged to make sure that the update has been installed before the month is out.

That's easier said than done for corporate customers, however: Microsoft has pulled the update from its WSUS platform, which allows for distribution of approved software patches within an internal network, following reports of a serious flaw. When installed on a Windows 8.1 system, the computer loses the ability to check the WSUS server for future updates.

Although the flaw only affects servers running encrypted HTTPS connections, which is not the default, but with the latest TLS 1.2 functionality disabled, which is the default, the flaw is serious enough for the update to be removed from distribution. Although it will still be available through Windows Update for home users, WSUS administrators are asked to wait for an updated version to be released; those who have already deployed the flawed update can either enable TLS 1.2 if running WSUS on Windows Server 2008 R2 or disable HTTPS altogether if running on any other platform.

Microsoft has not offered a date for the patch's rerelease.

What is going on over at Redmond?

Is it all a nefarious plot to have Bill Gates riding back to the rescue like Steve Jobs?

How did you guys get the update 1? I've run Windows update under 8.1 and didn't find it. I did install all the required Windows updates that it told me it had. The Windows store also does not have it. Is it rolled out in a timely manner?

It was under Optional Updates. You can't tell which one it is by name, just look for the 900 mb one.

no it's worldwide. I just did a clean install of Windows 8.1 Core, did al lthe updates, then it found an 880 MB or so update that is the spring update

try again after deleting all files located in then reboot:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

Weird I did just that yesterday deleted everything in my update download cache and checked again all I had was a Windows defender definition. I had some large updates too but I don't have the start charm they talk about. I think my total updates yesterday were 890mb.

I'll check that when I get home. Maybe I do but I feel like I would have had the start menu thing if I did.

Then I probably already have it, didn't notice anything different either way.
