I think demand for windows 8.1 will decrease, as many people on windows 7 will just skip 8 altogether and get win 10 for free. I'd predict the price of win 8.1 to drop to match win 7 (or drop to the price of any windows version that qualifies for the free win10 upgrade). If win 7 was super-cheap, I'd buy that with the intention of free upgrade for win 10, just as easily as I'd buy win 8, because either would qualify.

They might be betting on making money off the marketplace for Windows. The more potential customers, the better.

Any rumors on whether you can do a clean install on the free upgrade of windows 10 or do you have to waste time installing 8 and then upgrading. I wish they would just let you enter 2 CD keys at a time and call it a day.
