Windows 8.1 doesn't recognize a wired Xbox 360 controller?

Seriously? This is unbelievable to me.

Just plugging in wired 360 controller worked fine and instantaneously in 7 and even Vista. But in the latest, most "up to date" OS, it isn't recognized at all? Windows doesn't even know what KIND of USB device it is..."Unknown USB device...Device descriptor failed"

Huh?

I've googled this and tried downloading the Win 7 x64 Xbox 360 driver, with no success. Tried automatically updating. I'm at a complete loss.

Is it really true that MS's flagship controller for most PC games for their own console is not recognized by their latest OS?

Anybody have any success with this?

My wired 360 controller works just fine in Windows 8.1.

Do you have any other devices plugged in that are recognized as gaming controllers? I have found that ever since Windows Vista if I have multiple gaming devices plugged in sometimes the 360 controller doesn't get recognized. I have to unplug my Razer Tartarus for example before my 360 controller gets properly recognized.

Works fine for me; wired and wireless. I'm assuming you have some sort of conflict happening.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Turns out the "breakaway" part of the wired connection was loose, but not noticeably so. Reseated it and everything works fine.

Sometimes it's the simplest things. :)
