windows 8.1 boot to start menu, not desktop

Problem. Even though I've unchecked boot to desktop in the taskbar and nagivation properties section, I still cannot boot up to the start menu. It automatically boots to my windows 8.1 desktop and I don't want to boot to that interface. Anyone seen this before? Its very frustrating and I can't figure out how to make it boot to the start menu instead.

Do you have a third party start menu program (Classic Shell, Start8, etc.) installed?

I am pretty sure I remember reading about a method using task scheduler to boot to desktop or start screen (this was from 8.0 when you didn't have the option pictured above.) So you may want to see if you have a forgotten one running, or if using one to solve your problem.

Unchecking the top box under start screen should do it so I don't know what is causing your problem.
