Windows 7 6801 is "out there." Your Vista beta serial key activates it until 7/09. Win7 public beta is supposedly due out soon.

Yeah I am testing it right now as well.
Seems very unfinished for it being the new windows and all.
Its like they just added some minor stuff to the standard vista OS and called it windows 7 LOL.
Its also very buggy I mean sometimes it maxes out either 1 or all my cpu cores for no reason while idle??
I am sure they will fix this in the next build though..

Do you honestly expect a feature complete and fully polished OS when it's not even in beta yet, and still has at least 3 public builds to go through? Even the best parts of Windows 7 were locked out and not complete in that build you have, hence why you have to jump through hoops to get even an early look at the new taskbar/jumplists.

but the question is, will it get better enough to justify $200+?
thats alot of money just to take the time to install and then go back and do all the exact same things your doing now.

Probably.

However, my university has great deals on software (I can get Vista Ultimate for $20). ;)

If you own Vista, an upgrade version won't be too expensive. And I can easily see $100ish OEM versions. That's what I'll get.

Not really. It's not like it's a recurring fee and it's something that you generally use for a very long time. Vista's been out since 01/07 so if you got it around then you'll have had almost 3 years with Vista before Win7 is released. That's provided it makes it out near the end of 09 which is questionable given MS' release track record. So even if we play it optimistic with the release date of Win7 that's and say you paid the MSRP of $319 for Vista Ultimate that's ~$13/mo.

so ~$13/mo. sounds fine if its offering new features a user wants/needs. I'm talking about those many who will upgrade, then do all the exact same things their doing right now with their current OS.

some people do nothing more than browse web/game/use photoshop and other 3rd party apps. so for those people i'm saying whats the point?
i know there are alot of enthusiasts out there upgraded to Vista yet still game at DX9, use the same 3rd party applications and browser...etc thats still compatable with XP, frankly, i dont get it at all.

A few posters here kinda sound like to me their interested in W7 and plan on buying it despite not knowing the full extent of its features over Vista which so far, imo, sound more like something that can be coded in a Service Pack. So hopefully it offers something that can either change the user experience for the better or offer applications that someone needs or wants to use over current.

So it just seems a bit silly to pay for a product and use the same services it offers that you already use from a product you currently own.
kinda like buying a 4 slice toaster when you never wanted nor intend to make 4 slices at once

It's not quite like that. Me, and many other people are enthusiasts who will use a new O/S just to experience something different. I could do everything I do now on 2kpro. I like seeing a new interface, and I like keeping up with technology. If I have the latest O/S, I can help people when they have problems with their new computers since I'll already be familiar with them.

There isn't a point to blindly upgrading and most of those users will just get Win7 with a new PC so it's a moot point for them anyway.

And they deserve to spend that money for no reason, it was their choice.

I'm sure there are a lot of those people. There are people out there that just have to have the newest version of everything for no reason other than to have it.

Technically anything could be added in a Service Pack, it all depends on how MS wants to release the changes.

So hopefully it offers something that can either change the user experience for the better or offer applications that someone needs or wants to use over current.

I'm sure there will be lots of contention about whether or not the changes are for the better. And IMO I don't think Windows should come with any, or at least very few, apps. One of my biggest gripes about Windows is it's inflexibility. If MS wasn't allowed to force IE on everything it would be a lot better.

So it just seems a bit silly to pay for a product and use the same services it offers that you already use from a product you currently own.

No doubt, but there are always people that will buy that toaster for no reason other than they feel it's the best or "you never know" and that's their choice.

No, you buy the toaster because you wants lost of toast.. all the time. Toast is sooooo much better than regular bread it isn't even fair. I don't think that anything is the 'greatest thing since sliced bread' but I do think that many could be the 'greatest thing since toasted sliced bread'. Mmmmm toast.

On topic, I do agree that many simply upgrade because it is there. Myself included, I have usually found a way to get it for free, or for a greatly reduced price however. From WinME to WinXP Home, I got a free upgrade from Dell. From WinXP Home to WinXP Pro I got a free upgrade from my school. From WinXP Pro -> Vista Business I got free from my school again. For OS X I got 10.4->10.5 for cheap since I got the family pack (each license $40 then)

I've been running Windows 7 for a bit now as a tester for Autodesk. I have not been a fan of Vista . I think it has way too many annoyances and things that just didn't work right with my profession, CGI. I still use XP X64 as my main OS for work related things. I do think they have gotten a lot right with Windows 7. If it continues along this path I can easily see me replacing all my systems with it, I can't say that for vista right now.

It isn't any one major thing but lots of little things. It seems faster. Applications like Maya that before would have odd pauses where the pc would seem unresponsive, now are gone. Applications feel more responsive than vista, which is one of my reasons for keeping xp x64. Other things like UAC are less annoying and problems I had with how windows explorer handled files are now fixed.

The build I am running currently is 6956 which I see has also been leaked.

It still isn't production ready, lots of little things here and there that aren't working, but overall I think windows 7 just might be MS saving grace.
