Windows 7 - usb connect-disconnect sound

When I plug in my game controller, Windows acknowledges it plugged in (connect sound), then shortly after gives me the disconnect sound. This is where it gets strange...

Windows acknowledges controller plugged in. Start a game, controller not there.
Exit game, re-enter game, controller there.

Can someone help me stop having to load games twice?

Loose connection. One port could be port, multiple ports could be controller. I also get this when I am running my VMs and they are fighting over control of the device.

Are you plugging the controller into a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port?

Also what hardware are you running (specifically the motherboard).

I would check to see if it, or the USB controller, is disappearing from Device Manager. Is it built into the motherboard or an add-on card? I once had an add-on that was a cheap POS and would drop the controller randomly. It would come back with every reboot so I was following internet advice to try different drivers, with it always working after a reboot then I got fed up and replaced the card. Granted this was before integrated USB3.

Otherwise could be dirty USB socket, weak spring contacts in it allowing the connection to get loose like Ketchup mentioned. Rarely with low quality PSU you might have insufficient 5VSB power and the board is set to use 5VSB for USB (more common on integrated USB2 than USB3). Sometimes the board has a jumper to pick between 5VSB or main 5V power.

Exactly, that's why i wanted to see what the OP is running in terms of hardware.

USB 2.0. How specific do you want on the hardware? This is an i5-2400 by Gigabyte on 16GB of RAM with all the USB ports on the motherboard but one which is on an add-on memory card front panel reader which I rarely use for anything but flash drives. This logitech receiver is plugged into the back, I'm sitting in front of the computer. I dual boot this system with Win7 and Win10 although I only use it in Win7 with older titles that need an X-input controller.

It sees it, recognizes it then it becomes an unknown usb device with a yellow error. That is, as I said, until I boot the game, exit the game, then reload the game. Then, ridiculously, everything is fine.

Don't know about the power issue but every other device I have in all the same USB ports work fine.

Ah.. one device. Well, I think you answered your question. Might as well just live with it at this point, as least until it becomes more than just a nuisance.

I've had those cheap $5-10 USB2.0 multi-memory-card reader 3.5" boxes, cause problems with systems before. Try unplugging it from the mobo header, and see if things don't get better.

Well, that's an interesting experiment. Never occurred to me to disable it. Truth be told, never had usb problems before buying it years ago and although that doesn't necessarily mean anything, it is a possibly suspect variable that's easily eliminated. To be honest the sd reader stopped working a few months ago and I've never used its mini-jack ports. For usb 3.0 and sd cards I now have a 3.0 device that plugs in externally for various formats so this thing doesn't really even have a purpose. Ok, I'll try that.

But this controller is new and all my other ports work fine so I'll be stumped if this doesn't work.
