Windows 7 UPGRADE Installation

I?m currently running Windows Vista (64-bit) Ultimate with an OEM license. I pre-ordered a copy of Windows 7 Professional ? Upgrade.

I chose to go with Professional for Windows 7 because I don?t care about any of the features exclusive to Windows 7 Ultimate. However, I?ve heard that maybe it isn?t possible to upgrade from Vista Ultimate to 7 Professional (because somehow that is considered downgrading?!).

Will I be able to do an upgrade installation (keeping all my files, installed applications, and no reformatting)?

I?ll be pretty upset if I won?t be able to because I pre-ordered my copy during the 50%-off sale this summer so it would cost a LOT more for me to cancel that pre-order and move to a pre-order of Windows 7 Ultimate ? Upgrade. There was NO information saying that this upgrade path wouldn?t be acceptable so I feel screwed that there wasn?t a warning notifying me that I couldn?t go Vista Ultimate --> 7 Professional.

Don't know if this really addresses your concern or not, but you could hold on to the Win7Pro upgrade and try reselling it later on for more than the $50 you paid. Or sell your Vista Ultimate on FS/FT, and buy a Vista Home Premium on FS/FT, then do the upgrade from Vista Home Premium to Win7 Pro. You could probably come out ahead $$wise, but it'd be a hassle installing Vista HP and buying and selling the OS disks and licenses.

You'll be able to do an "upgrade" installation, IE getting to use an upgrade disc. But no, you'll have to reinstall because of the version mismatch. You have Vista Ultimate, you HAVE to use a 7 Ultimate to be able to do a direct upgrade.
