Ok i was reading this thread

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2321656&enterthread=y

The link for the facts looks to say that you can upgrade from Windows 7 rc but you have to do a back up. Now this document from Microsoft says an upgrade from the rc to final version isn't supported.

Unsupported Upgrade Scenarios

? Upgrades to Windows 7 from the following operating systems are not supported:
? Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows XP, Windows Vista® RTM, Windows Vista Starter, Windows 7 M3, Windows 7 Beta, Windows 7 RC, or Windows 7 IDS

Am i reading it wrong or are they saying two different things?

It's not supported; the migration application only knows how to deal with Vista. However you can force it to try anyhow (apparently with moderate success) by unpacking the DVD and editing one of the files such that it thinks Win7 RC is a valid OS to migrate from.

Just do the full install. If you try to hack an install then when you have problems with windows you will not know if it is the upgrade that caused it or is it a problem with the OS. If you don't have disc needed to do a reinstall of other programs then now is a good time to start locating them since you would be in bad shape if a hard drive fails.

All those things listed are for what's called an "in-place" upgrade - meaning it will keep all your files and programs, and simply overwrite the core OS with the new version. That's really only supported for Vista.

With all the OSes listed, you'll have to start the upgrade from inside the existing OS, then when you reboot into setup, do a "Clean" install, which will move your old windows install to a folder (so you can get files and such from it) and basically delete everything else so you'll need to reinstall all programs.
