Windows 7 Ultimate - Legit Copy - Key Blocked

So, I apologize if this isn't allowed - but anandtech is the only PC site I visit anymore.

Here's the scenario - I purchased a sealed copy of Windows 7 Ultimate from a user on here over a year ago. Sealed. Today Microsoft blocked the key stating the copy is for Builders and Developers only and not for home use. They will not unblock it.

I escalated three times on trying to find out what my options are, and they just refer me to their counterfeit page. It's not counterfeit.

So now I have a very bad taste in my mouth. The seller from a year ago did not inform me this was not for home use; and Microsoft wants some developer ID to unblock it.

So is this now just a paperweight? And can anyone suggest another OS for browsing, xbmc, and D3? 😛

Someone on here sold you a "Builders and Developers" version? Did they claim it was a retail box?

Yes, and it is a retail box.. least everything looks like a retail package - but MS says the key with it is for.. i forgot what they called it MSDP or something for builders.

PCNewb, please create a thread over in Moderator Discussions about this sale. Since this copy was sold on our forums, the troll who did this to you is subject to our rules and needs to be dealt with.

Yep, that's a pretty common scam I'm afraid. Counterfeiters will acquire keys in bulk via TechNet*, and then print up retail boxes and stick said key in there. To the user it at first looks legit, but in fact you've just been resold a bulk development copy that is not allowed to be resold.

Sometimes MS will be nice and swap keys. Have you filled out MS's counterfeit report form?

* Thanks a lot jackasses. Now MS is making TechNet almost useless

Thanks again for the feedback ViRGE. I completed the form for Microsoft, but I basically have to mail everything in and surrender what I did purchase without any gaurantee of getting anything back - anything mailed to them becomes the product of Microsift.

Yay for twisting the knife while the stab is still fresh! This bites. Hopefully my legit copy of Windows XP is still legit 😛

What you have right now is of no value, it's counterfeit. So you aren't losing anything of significance.:|
