I've spent a ton of hours today and yesterday trying to debug this thing, and I still feel stuck.
I'm using an Acer Aspire ASE700-UQ660A with the RAM upgraded to 4GB DDR2 with an EVGA Nvidia 8800 GT for the graphics card.
About three weeks ago, I'd just about filled my harddrive, so I decided to get a new drive, and while I was at it, try out Windows 7 64-bit on the new 1.5 Terabyte Hitachi drive and take advantage of my extra RAM. The idea being that I could "upgrade" from Vista installed on the old drive, but avoid clobbering the old one by installing to the new drive.
The installation wasn't smooth, but I eventually had an apparently stable build of Win7 Home Premium plus 64-bit running on the machine.
Yesterday, my machine suddenly stopped showing the login screen--it would get past the animated "Windows Loading" screen, play the windows start sound.. and the screen would turn off, and the monitor LED would flash to signal "no input". CTRL-ALT-DEL elicited no response.
I tried the "low resolution" mode, but got the same issue, so I booted into Safe mode with Networking. Some research suggested my display drivers could be the culprit, so I uninstalled them and rebooted. Sure enough, on reboot I could log in. But no previous version of the drivers has prevented this issue. In fact, if ANY display driver is installed, I see that same error. Restore points past a critical update on 10/25 simply failed restore, and restoring to a point after that date didn't finx my problem. After a day of frustration, I'd finally decided to go back to Vista and verify that it still worked as expected (it's still on my original harddrive-unmolested).. but I see the same error!
At this point, it seems mobo, bios, or graphics card (or, possibly, PSU) related, but I'm not really sure where to begin.
Suggestions from veterans of the upgrade wars would be greatly appreciated!
Here's a Belarc Advisor printout, for extra detail.
