Windows 7 SP1 huge system img file (376gb)

I was on my Dad's Dell and noticed he only had about 150gb left on the hd (500gb). He has few pictures, no music, mostly pdf, nothing big. Backup is turned on and I deleted all but the last two backups which combine for a little over 5 gb. Why such a large image file?!? Can I delete it and put a new image on his external, 1tb ssd?
tia.

Putting a backup on the same drive is counter-productive. You definitely want to have the current backups on another drive, then change the backup schedule to put future backups on that drive.

Exactly. I don't know why anyone would want to that?!?
