Windows 7 sound loop errors

When somthing crashes the sound somtimes loops yeah? It usually stops when the process is killed either by windows or via task manager, but in windows 7 after the process is killed there is still sound and it continues to loop and i have to restart.

What gives? Is there a windows process i can kill/restart to kill sound without having to restart the entire computer?

Usually ill be playing a game or whatever, in this case it was alpha centauri alien crossfire, i have a xonar D2X, latest drivers, this is windows 7 x64 ultimate. Im not really looking for specific solutions here as ancient game + new hardware dosent play well its a fact of life i just want some way to kill off sound and restart it without having to do a full restart each time.

Have you tried restarting the Windows Audio service?

Nope, whats it called? Closest i found was "wuauserv" and the description reads "windows update" so i guess thats not it.

EDIT: Aha wait, audiosrv! Ok next time i get a sound loop crash ill kill that service and see if it works 🙂
