Windows 7 refresh rate

I have a notebook that dual boots Vista Ultimate and Windows 7. I actually like 7 over Vista but cannot use it for long periods of time because I can only set the refresh at 60 hertz so I have to use Vista.

In Vista I am running at 70 hertz but like I said I can only go as high 60 hertz in 7. I have tried the usual suspects of monitor refresh and going thru Nvidia Control panel. I have not found to raise the refresh rate. I ahve also tried lowering the resolution too.


I was wondering if there was some kind of registry hack that would work or a software down load. I have tried NTune but 7 gives me a BSOD when I try to unstall it. Thanks

C2D P8400 Nvidia 9800GTS new drivers and old ones tried, 17 inch screen

Notebook = LCD

Refresh rate doesn't mean anything with an LCD. Why are you concerned.

When I suffer eye strain using the same laptop using 7 with 60 hertz RR and none using Vista at a 70 hertz RR then it does cause me concern.

The same goes for my 20 inch LCD on my desktop using XP Pro. At a 60 hertz RR the headaches start within an hour. At 70 hertz RR I can sit in front of it for hours
 
There is something else at work here. LCDs simply do not refresh. They are staring pixels that turn on and off. That variable is response time.

You may be being affected by resolution and size or density of screen font, and clarity of text. Those are all different issues. You can change the GUI refresh rate to anything you want, but on a LCD it will have no effect.

Refresh is the rate at which an electron beam scans the surface of a CRT. The slower the rate, the more the visible flicker. That just doesn't happen with LCDs - there is no flicker.
 
the only thing you could possibly notice is that your mouse cursor moves more smoothly or scrolling a web page up/down is more smooth

nothing huge but some prefer 75hz over 60hz, like xtknight (on these forums) & myself.
 
The florescent bulb in your LCD display my be going bad and flickering too much. LCD's don't refresh as others have pointed out so there will be no difference between 70 and 60 when it comes to flickering. The only issue I see for gamers is 60 Hz will limit you to 60 FPS if VSync is on to reduce tearing. In most games 60 FPS is plenty for a smooth experience so it is really a minor issue at best.
