It might be nice to use this as a unified thread for this type of thing to share our experience and any workarounds.

I'm setting up 7 RC now and a lot of the apps I used on vista x64 cause "known compatibility issues" warning to pop up.

The first was Daemon Tools so I aborted installation -- any suggestions for a free alternative?

The second was ESET eav (firewall+NOD32 antivirus) I installed it anyway, no issues yet but I havent rebooted either.
<<<significant issues with ESET fw/av probably my fault, now its working

Does windows 7 just always give this warning with 3rd party software to keep our expectations low and steer us toward MS software I wonder?

EditIFSDrives (adriver to help windows read linux ext2/3 partitions) can be made to work, kind of a dirty hack see below.

Office 2k7, Visio, and VS2008 -- no problems yet

After reboot I'll try Adobe CS3 and post any issues --Update CS3 installed and updated without issue. Photoshp works, haven't tested anything else yet.

Foobar2000 works

PuTTY works

Inkscape (including gtk runtime) seems to work though I haven't messed with it too much

Notepad++ works great as always

NOD32 didn't give me any compatibility notice when I installed it on Win7 x64. Did you download the newest 64-bit version from ESET or install from CD or something?

Yes, the troubleshooter actually directed me to the ESET website to get the latest ver. ESET was nice enough to let me use the same key for the latest version (4.xx) that I got when I paid for 3.xx.

Nice job MS. The latest ver seems to work well so far.

The current version of Daemon Tools DOES work with Windows 7 x64, even though it still gives that warning.

The reason the older versions did not was because of the SPTD driver being incompatible, but the current version was written to support Windows 7.

Just ignore that message, and you'll be fine.

Anything that installs a driver or tries to attach itself to the kernel , like firewall, antivirus, virtual drives, is likely to cause a notice.

Thanks for that tip.
I'm not sure I even really want to use windows7 at all, I have a pretty good working XP install on VMWare on my ubuntu partition. I think the problem is my realtek onboard NIC. It gave me fits under Vista. It would randomly decide I wasn't connected to the internet for some reason though I could access LAN shares and stuff. It seems to be even worse in windows7. While the diagnostic tool is more sophisticated, it doesn't fix my problem. For example while troubleshooting a LAN connection it told me to go and power cycle my cable modem. Obviously, my modem is fine or I wouldn't be able to post this message. The networking stuff is just buried too deep in GUI kludge. I might try an addon card in the future but between the poor networking and no ext3 drive mounting i have no use for this OS right now.

If your network interface is having problems it is either the driver or the hardware. There is nothing inherent in vista or seven that cause network problems. You probably should use the newest driver from realtek and not the one that comes with 7.

I removed the ESET firewall application and I'm going to see if I can reproduce the problem again without it. I think its definitely a software issue since it works wonderfully under other OS's.

I got IFSDrives to work this way:
First of all I use a limited account, Windows 7 lets you set it up to behave something like gksudo in ubuntu (love that), if you run as admin you might not have the same behavior as I did.
1) Download Ext2IFS_1_11a from http://www.fs-driver.org/
right click on the file and select properties.

2) On the compatibility tab click "Change settings for all users" and enter admin password or click the UAC nag box.

3) Check the checkboxes: "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" -->Windows Vista SP2 on the drop down and also check the "run this program as an administrator" checkbox. then "apply" and "ok."

4) Click ok on the original properties dialog (the second one was for admin I guess).
Then right click on the file agian and select run as admin, follow the installation prompts and finish.

5) You will then be able tu use the control panel launcher to mount your ext2 and ext3 drives.

*note - if your ext3 partition is not visible see the note about the maximum inode size at the above website. You may need to reformat the partition via commandline in linux to make it readable.

It turns out it was the ESET firewall application, I did a lot of random fiddling around and after a couple of reboots and stuff it now seems to work as intended. I'm not sure if it was the problem in Vista or not.

Confirmed Daemon Tools does work in Win7 x64. Also I've installed Office 2007, Adobe CS4 Suite (haven't had time to play around with it but no compatibility warnings on install), Comodo Firewall & Anti-Virus x64. It's on a secondary computer so I haven't tried any games and stuff but in general if it is supported and works in Vista x64 there is no reason it shouldn't work in Win7 x64.

akugami,
Have you updated CS4 suite, yet? In my case, installation was fine but when I tried to update it, it failed as well as making some of the programs to not function.
