Windows 7 RC "upgrade" to retail?

sygyzy

Lifer
Is it possible to turn a release candidate version of Windows 7 into a home premium or pro version, or any other retail version for that matter without doing a clean reinstall? The code base by definition of an RC shuold be pretty much identical. The way I would hope it'd work is if you just put in the disc and key and your RC turns into a full version.

Thoughts?

No, officially

and yes, seeing as the rc versions are ultimate edition, you would have to upgrade to ultimate. unless you removed the ei.cfg file from the dvd to install the other versions.
to upgrade you would have to change the cversion.ini file on the dvd to says the min version is the same as the rc build that you have installed

On a technical level it's possible, although as Dahak notes you have to modify the installer to do it. I've done it, and it worked well for me.

However bear in mind that this does not meet the legal requirements for an upgrade. You must still have a valid Vista/XP license, and surrender it in order to take advantage of the upgrade license.

I just updated from the RC to Home Premium without any issues.
You need to go into the registry and change the current version ID to HOMEPREMIUM.
