I have Vista 64 on my rig and I want to replace it with W7.

My question is this....I want to build a new rig in another year. Can I install my Vista 64 on the new machine AND use W7 again? Do I need the W7 FULL edition or can I get away with just the upgrade for both my current rig AND then the new one?

Thanks

You can Not run two computers with the same OS Lic. (key) number.

You need two independent Keys one for each computer.

See if you can find the family upgrade pack which you can install on three computers.

Using an upgrade still ties up the old license, that's the whole point. You got a discount because you're "upgrading" the same PC.

Never buy upgrade, not worth the hassle. It's best to just clean install. Gives you a chance to do some house cleaning too.

Upgrade discs can do clean installs too, the only real difference is the licensing.

Oh so as long as you have the original CD for the other OS? Did not know, thought you had to have it installed.

I don't think it'll do the "insert old media" verification anymore, however you can do the double-install trick which results in a clean install and only adds ~20min or so to your install. Depending on the speed of your machine, obviously.
