When my system was built the BIOS was set to IDE. In trying to change it to AHCI, I have been having a discussion on another forum(TWEAKTOWN) that says, and unfortunately it seems plausible, that I have to change the BIOS to AHCI and re-install the OS. The discussion also thinks that unless I do this, Trim is not working
Is there another way to get this working??????

Silverstone FT02, AusTeK P6X58D-E with Intel 930, Kingston 128gb SSDNow, WDC Black 500gb, TSSTcorp CDDVDW, Kingston 12gb DD3,
ATI Radeon 5850, HP ZR24w, Windows 7 64bit Pro,
SeaSonic X750W Gold, Xigmatex Dark Knight

and anand has mentioned in his latest SSD reviews that only recently has Intel got the trim working better, so if you are a total geek, its advised to run Win 7 X64 SP1 AHCI, latest Intel RST drivers/chipset drivers 10.1.0.1008 and 9.2.0.1021

It is nice to know there is an update by Intel. HOW do I install it?
It is nice to know a change was made with no problems. What is the system and HOW did you go about it.
I am not a complete newbie, just very careful when I modify the system.

Is it necessary to have AHCI set in order for TRIM to work?

No. I dont have AHCI and TRIM is enabled just fine. AHCI is unnecessary for SSDs as far as I can tell.

Trim can be enabled in IDE with some SSD firmware, but whether it is working is the question

Then its all about the drivers you use - Intel or Generic MS for max perf

Which is why I recommend the latest Intel RST (Dec 15 2010)

Is it REQUIRED for AHCI to be enabled. The articles pointed to previously allowed me to check that TRIM commands are enabled. Yet, there seemed to be a question as to if TRIM was actually doing its job.

BANKSTER55,
I would install the change just to recall those days(HA HA).
I have received notice from Kingston on the drive I have.
KINGSTON REPLY:
IDE Mode is fine. AHCI is not required.
2 main reasons for AHCI mode is NCQ (Native Command Queueing) and for hot swapping. This drive doesn't support NCQ and you are not going to be hotswapping the drive since this is the OS drive. The driver you mentioned is a RAID driver. Are you RAIDing? If you are then trim
doesn't matter because it doesn't work within a Raid Array.

The driver is RST Intels Rapid Storage Tech
Its bisexual - HARDWARE RAID from the bios with Intel chipsets OR AHCI in Windows no RAID
There are 3 kinds of RAID actually
http://www.overclockers.com/setting-up-os-raid-with-windows-7-ultimate/
I am running those drivers right now on all my PC and I wouldnt think of RAIDING anybody or anything.

Now I have to repeat here in this thread again, no less than Anand lal Shimpi in his 550MB/s OCZ SSD mini review said that the latest Intel RST are the first ones that work with modern controllers. You see, TRIM is like a garbage disposal, if you dont clean it out from time to time it gets all clogged up. Which was just what was talked about in the mobo forum. They used words like not smooth, herky jerky, hesitates etc. And after those drivers you dont need were installed, they all said everything was smooth as butter, even the normally grumpy ones. And they were talking about SINGLE expensive SSD's on their new expensive P67 boxes.

But if you talked to the guy on the phone, and he told you that RST is only RAID and fuggeddabouddit, I accede to his superior knowledge. Your happiness is the main reason for my existence on Planet Earth.

Edit:
Just noticed this thread in mobo forum
Guy from ASUS is testing the C300 SSD on all P67 models
Gee he's using that damn driver too - on a single drive
Then he's going to use 2 drives in RAID!!! OMG!
I was just thinkin - maybe you could email the link to your guy at Kingston
