Windows 7 problems with Sleep and Hibernate mode

No matter how I set the Power settings I can't get my system to automatically go into sleep mode or hibernate mode. Instead after I let it sit a while the system freezes. If I manually place it in either mode it works fine. System is win 7 Pro 64bit, 4gigs of ram, Athlon dual core 5050e, Asrock A780GXE/128M Motherboard. Any suggestions?

1. Hibernation Mode switches Off the computer and just saves the content of the RAM to the HD. As a result when the computer is switch On again, it loads the RAM to be in same manner that it was when it was switched Off ( http://www.ezlan.net/standby.html ).

2. In case of the sleep check the Advance setting and make sure thta the events that suppose to wake it up are checked correctly.

3. Check the Mobo BIOS to make sure that it does not have its own setting that is done in hardware and might clash with the software settings.

Make sure S3 is enabled in bios.
Unplug any external drives.
Use your motherboard manufacturers chipset and lan drivers.
Is the machine stable with all power settings disabled?
