Windows 7 on workstation with 256GB RAM

I have to run a server OS on a workstation?
 
Why are you surprised? The average user for Win 7 has roughly 4 GB of RAM.

It sounds like you are trying to use it in an Enterprise class capacity...need to plan accordingly 😉

Just out of curiousity...what apps require that much RAM?
 
192gb on what desktop? 16gb dimms (ecc) require 12 slots - you got a board that can do that? if so that's a server board.

It's not necessarily the files it's the simulation differences when run on complex designs. It loves multiple cores / sockets as well. :awe:

Desktop <> workstation. Workstations share lots of (hardware) similarities with servers. Shame on MS for not supporting at least 2TB system memory on its "flagship" OS. Windows 2008 Server R2 is essentially the same as Windows 7 with extra goodies.

No, definitely not a cost issue. I was using Server 2008 on a workstation because I hated Vista back in its day. 😀
 
Would NX7 run on Windows Server 2K8? Oh, I just saw your last post. I think you're kinda stuck for now. I haven't heard a thing (or even paid attention to) the prospects for the next Microsoft server OS. I'd be really surprised if they didn't at least partially address the concerns you have, which are definitely legit, but then we're talking about a company run by Steve Ballmer...
 
Yikes! I have a Supermicro X8DTH-6F that I am going to pop in the test server this week for a review... and that thing only supports 192GB.

BTW, if you have a $600+ motherboard, dual LGA 1366 Xeons, and over 200GB of RAM, cost of a server license with 5 or fewer CALs is not usually a huge concern. For those wondering, here are the limits: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778&#37;28v=vs.85).aspx

Well Win7 is a desktop OS more than anything else, I'd assume MS' official stance would be to suggest using 2008 r2 - as you say it's not as if there were much differences.

It's just a licensing issue (not sure why they even bothered though, I'd think the amount of people with that particular problem is extremely small) so you should be able to change it quite easily if you're fine with running the OS in test mode (I'd assume it works quite similar to getting PAE run on 32bit versions).. but then, why bother?
 
Ah ok that's a problem. Didn't think that Siemens wouldn't support the server versions. Hacking a desktop version to get around the memory limit is hardly supported by them also so that would leave you with SLES/SLED which wouldn't have that artificial memory limit and is supported if I understand their certification site right (which was seemingly programmed by a summer intern 😛 )
