Windows 7 on an Old Laptop

I tried it out on an old IBM Z60m and it is working much faster than when XP SP3 was loaded. I am very impressed needless to say and gonna try it out on an old Mobile Computing M1200 next.

Wasn't there word of a "netbook edition" that was going to be added to the family (Home, Ultimate, Busniess....ect)?
I know the beta isn't tiered yet but when the final product rolls around it may provide some life for older systems.

2.1GHz what CPU? P4? P4M? MP4? PM? Turion?

I would highly suggest putting more RAM into the machine first, at least get up to 1GB, 2GB if you can.

Since the driver model is the same as Vista's, I wouldn't recommend running 7 on anything you can't run Vista with. Yes, 7 appears to be lighter on system resources. But IMHO it's unwise to leave yourself open for driver issues.

Ive seen a few people report positive experiences with windows 7 on 512mb. But they didnt say what they used it for or whatever, it might be the case that windows 7 runs great on 512 but you wont be running anything else other than the OS itsself. On my laptop the beta used up four hundred odd megs of RAM so that leaves 112 for other stuff in a 512 system, my laptop has 4GB of ram luckily.

Just finished. Technically it runs fine. I barely have any room to maneuver due to RAM. I'm going to try out some applications. Runs ALOT better than I ever expected it to though.

No, there won't be a "Netbook Edition", Win7 was built with these in mind.

Can you up it to 1GB or preferably 2GB of RAM? If you can, then definitely do it. My personal Win7 experience (have tried it in about 20 PCs) has been outstanding.

it's working fine on my HP TC1100 TabletPC.
Celeron 800Mhz, 1.2Gb RAM.

only problem is the wireless driver seems to have issues with my Wireless router.

If you have a fast/recent thumb drive, plug that in. I haven't thought of trying it on 7 because the box I have it installed on is loaded up with stupid amounts of RAM. But in Vista there's a feature called 'ReadyBoost' which can use the thumb drive like extra memory. Not quite the performance equivalent of more RAM, but it's supposed to make a nice difference for the better when you're under 2GB installed.

To use it on Vista, all you need to do is plug in the thumb drive, and AutoRun will ask if you want to use it for ReadyBoost. Presumably, it would/should work the same in 7.

I just got a netbook with xp. Using xp is like horror flashback.
I feel like Im back in the days of win98.

ANyway, I got this netbook that has no dvd but it did come with a restore disc.
Isnt there a way to put all the restore files on a flash drive and install from there?
I want to put W7 on the netbook but somehow forsee needing to restore the
original out of the box stuff.

Also have to put W7 install on a flash drive.
