My wifes' little Dell 10z is running windows vista home basic right now. I hear that Windows 7 actually uses ready boost better. This thing of course is a single core atom with a maximum of 1Gb of ram installed, so it needs all the help it can get.

i run windows 7 professional on older dell latitdue 120L notebook. It has an intel mobile 1.73GHz processor and 2GB of ram. and an 80GB hard drive. Has an old intel 910/915 mobile express chipset and graphics card. It runs pretty good for a laptop that is 5 years old.

win7 ultimate runs fine on my asus netbook with an atom n280 and 2gig ram. wiping xp was the first thing i did when i got it (and adding the extra gig). dont regret it one bit.

Along similar lines, I was hoping somebody could give some advice for my netbook rig. I have a crazy basic netbook that is a 900MHz Celeron with 1GB of RAM. I can take the RAM up to 2GB, but I'm obviously stuck with that processor.

Per the Windows 7 Upgrade advisor and from what I have read the requirements the minimum is 1Ghz but I was wondering if anybody knew how absolute that was

Gah. Keep XP for that puppy. That Celeron has only 128k of L2 cache, and it's deliberately crippled in terms of latency as well. Win7 is a very good OS, and more efficient for sure than Vista, but Celeron 900 + 64gb of ram would still suck.

I know the Aero display would be out, which I could live with, and I didn't think about the L2 cache deal. I found some eee forums out there where people did put it on a 900 Cely and it seemed like some had good luck, and others got it to install but wound up with goofy long boot times of 15 minutes.

I have a free upgrade from the university so I won't have to shell out cash for it, so I am pretty damned curious. To do it right I would need to do the full wipe then install, but I am not so sure how curious I am to take the time to wipe my drive, install Windows 7 and revert back to XP if I need to.

I can always put it on my main desktop replacement notebook (monster 17" Dell) that meets the requirement, but I usually use my little netbook more than my "main" notebook and as such wanted to see if Windows 7 would be any improvement on it.

Make sure you can find a compatible 1GB memory chip before assuming you can upgrade. I have an older Gateway computer, which is actually a little more powerful than yours, and it says it can take 1GB chips, but I tried two neither one works. Not all 1GB chips are the same, even if they fit in the computer.

Win7 will run better than Vista on that netbook. It runs, in general, better than Vista on the same hardware.
