Windows 7 = No more codec packs?!

So, I've noticed over the past couple of weeks that I can play all the videos on my pc natively in Windows 7. I no longer have to download and install the k-lite codec pack, as I did for XP and Vista. Can it be that Microsoft included codecs for the wide variety of codecs, including .mkv (apparently so!)? Awesome!

Just one more thing to like about this OS.

What are you using to play it all back? WMP12? I noticed that WMP12 had no issue with any of the videos that I played in it, but I use VLC for all my MKVs on any OS, so I haven't even tried them yet. Huh, if that is true it is nice... just one less thing to worry about.

Yeah, I'm playing them back in WMP12.
 
It doesnt support mkv directly....you still need matroska splitter, and even then it didnt work for me until i installed ffdshow.

I really wasn't implying that... 😱

I was implying that by making audio/video playback possible without installing extra codecs Microsoft has finally entered the new millenium.
 
wow after four years of shunning wmp i might actually try it again. jet audio has always been a good friend to me. now if i would get around to downloading windows 7...
 
I don't think it'll do away with codec packs entirely, although they're certainly not as necessary and are going to be harder to install if the built-in codecs get merit 0x800000. From what I've found, the H.264 decoder doesn't seem to be accessible in other DirectShow media players (e.g Media Player Classic HC), and the MPEG-4 ASP decoder isn't doing any deblocking (something ASP needs badly at times). So long as there's a way to install codecs and there are better quality options, such packs will continue to exist.

Correct. What's new are MPEG-4 decoders: ASP, AVC, and AAC.

It's possible that it's downloading the codecs, but there's no notice that it is doing so, like WMP11 did. So in my mind, it's native. Even if it is downloading a codec, at least it's doing that; WMP11 would say it's finding a codec and then fail by only playing the audio of a movie file and you get the pretty visualizations instead of the actual video.

They're built in. MP4SDECD.DLL, MP43DECD.DLL, MPG4DECD.DLL.

So, question. Can 7 play back xvid natively? What about thumbnails of xvids in 64 bit mode? What about encoding to xvid? I suspect you'd still need to install the xvid codec for encoding but it is a complaint mpg4 format so I wouldn't be surprised it playback works fine.

XviD, DivX, and all other MPEG-4 ASP formats work fine for playback, albeit there doesn't appear to be any deblocking/deringing. I haven't checked thumbnails however, and it doesn't have an MPEG-4 ASP encoder as best as I can tell.
