Windows 7 networked drives hanging

I am having a problem with my network drives and Win7.

Under XP everything was fine but now there are a couple of problems with my networked drives.

I have //svr1/documents mapped as my S: drive and one of the softwares I use has to have a network drive letter. But when I try to save files it reverts back to //svr1/documents and not the S: drive. Most recently this happened in Word as well but Word isn't as picky.

Also, it takes forever to bring up the S: drive and also the directory listing for the drive.

What could be causing this sever lag?
