Hi,

This might be too stupid, but please bear with me. Like many others, I couldn't stand the metro UI when it first came with windows 8. Since then, I have been using startisback successfully for both windows 8 and windows 10 installations. Few days back, I came back home from a short trip to see that my windows 10 box is filled with the ugly tiles I hate to see. I don't know if the kids did something but anyways I unistalled and reinstalled startisback++ again but the desktop will never come back, only the start menu. startisback++ has been working very nicely with my windows 10. I don't know what happened.

I suspect this is because of a recent windows 10 update maybe? I can see that it uses some type of screen split mechanism, right? I haven't experienced this before. Did something change with the user interface in the latest updates??? Please tell me yes.

Long story short, I want my desktop back. I want to use windows 10 the same way I was using windows 7. I tried different start menu programs posted here in the sticky but they all failed to bring back my good old desktop. However, when uninstalling and reinstalling startisback++, I can see it flashing (the desktop) for few moments and then disappearing.

Did windows 10 change something when it comes the UI recently? If yes, can I still go back to the good old way by using some sort of software?!

Note: Windows 8 machines are fine.

Maaaaan, I feel like I lost command of my own PC.

I'm willing to pay to get my desktop back!

lol. Sorry for your problems man. I can't believe people support this trash as 'better'. Just wait until everyone is being charged monthly just to use their desktop - it's on it's way.

Yea I know it's business only. FOR NOW. Don't think for a minute this isn't the start of their 'future'. While that article makes some good arguments for why they wouldn't do it to the average user, who thought we'd be where we are at today? It also talks about 'MS doesn't even charge for upgrades anymore' which, well is frankly side talk BS. They had an agenda which was to push people to forced ads and their 'new' system. Ultimately it worked. That part of it is only going to get worse.

Also, read the bottom of that article. The MS going forward is not the MS we want. While I've had issues with some of the versions in the past I was never an MS hater, but I am quickly becoming one. While the average user may be content being 'ignorant' about technology and letting some company control their day to day activities, I am not one of those people.

I'm on Windows 8.1 so this advice might not be helpful. Does the screen say "Start" at the top left of the screen? If so there should be a desktop tile that you can click to take you to your desktop. Mine is the bottom left tile. If the screen has the word "Apps" on the top left of the screen click the little up arrow at the bottom of the screen and you will see the Start screen I mentioned before.

Not familiar with Startisback. I use classic shell but it has the option to skip the Metro screen (the tile screen I think you're talking about) which always takes me to my desktop.

Or maybe this will help.

I've been using classic shell ever since I moved from 7 to 8.1 and its been a life saver.:D It still works the same way on 1803 and if need be I'll install the latest fork of it.

You can get it back somewhat without any extra programs. Right click Start (or somewhere on your desktop) > Settings > Personalization. You can modify some settings under the START section. Also under THEMES, scroll down to DESKTOP ICONS to get some of those back.

Not perfect, but it doesn't require an add-on program like Classic Shell. I found this when I upgraded from Win 8 and Classic Shell ended up broken and I could not get it back. I am satisfied with the settings I could change in Win 10.
