I bought Windows 7 Home Premium Family Pack upgrade version (licensed for use on up to 3 PCs) for use on a HTPC I was building. I managed to get it activated without having a previous version installed by 1st installing it on a second partition without activating it then installing it again on the primary partition then activating that version. This was what was recommended if you didn't have a original install of Windows for the upgrade to work with and didn't want to a double install on the same hard drive partition and the registry hack didn't work.

Anyway thanks to a bad BIOS from Intel I bricked my motherboard and had to get a new one. The old motherboard was a Intel DH67CL. My new motherboard is a Intel DZ68DB. I'm using a different CPU though they are both i5 2500k at 3.3 ghz. What I'm concerned about is using up another of my licenses when I activate the OS when using the new motherboard. Is there a way to deactivate the activation tied to the old motherboard? I have 2 other PCs I'd like to use the other 2 Family Pack licenses on.

Don't worry about it. Hell it changes if you change video cards. Just use your activation and when you run out call and bitch at them. They will reactivate it for you. I've had to deal with this alot with changing hardware for testing etc using the 3pack.

If I install windows then activate, then install all my drivers (not physically changing hardware, just the drivers) Windows asks me to reactivate!

Freakin' annoying! I hate MS's activation methods!
