Windows 7 install error

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my aspire 1410 using a external lenovo CD/DVD external drive. I get keep getting this error message:

"A required CD/DVD drive device is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB flash, insert now"

Any ideas?
 
I am curious how to get around this problem too, particularly when you are trying to install windows from a USB thumb drive.
