Windows 7: If you click on "Start" and then "Control Panel"...

This is why I said in the other thread to not use the hack to do the RC to RTM upgrade. I don't even like the idea of doing a vista to 7 upgrade. Just too many issues that can occur with doing it. If anyone installs with any upgrade method please say so when you ask questions. The only reason upgrade is even an option is because people balk at the idea of doing a fresh install, even though it can be done in a couple hours, the preferred method is fresh install.

Off-topic question but is there a way to pin a control panel item to task bar? Not a short cut on desktop, but in task bar. I'd like to access certain control panel items (such as sound, power options, etc.) without closing or opening windows.

Mine also takes about 2 seconds. And its not like I have a slow system. Vista was even worse. Only Xp was instant for me..

Well neither do i. I have 4 cores at ~3.6ghz, 4gb ram, two "pretty" ok harddrives..there is no fricking reason it takes 2 seconds for the control panel to appear.

When i did the upgrades it also took a LONG time because it transferred thousands of files and registry entries over....so this should've been a clue.

When i did the fresh install yesterday it went EXTREMELY quick, like 5-10 mins (dont remember exactly) as opposed to 2+ hrs when i did the upgrade.

Dont forget, all that bloat and problems from former installs...you basically take them with you with an upgrade install...you're getting a new OS but with all the problems you had before. So..i totally change(d) my mind now and would NOT recommend upgrades anymore 🙂

Take the time, backup your data....do a new, fresh install and take the time to reinstall... less problems and more responsiveness are worth it.

Open the Control Panel then open its jumplist and select "Pin this program to taskbar".
That's one more click than before.. Maybe I'm being too lazy? But there are other stuff that can't be accessed by one click on task bar as well. (but can be done in XP/Vista's task bar)

I run with my control panel as a menu. Much faster that way.
Same here, but it still takes a bit to load. Probably 2 to 3 seconds. You'll see it cascade down the list as it loads each item.

Same thing here. Doesn't take as long as Vista did, but still a few seconds.

What's wrong with your PC?...Instant on my Vista x64 and Win7 RC.

You tell me 🙂 I will make a new partition today so i have a comparison.

I believe you can probably speed that up if you increase the amount of cache that icons are allowed to use...some regedit tweak about that....IIRC...

Control Panel on my netbook opens in less than a second.

Another way you can speed up the menu and windows is just to turn off Aero. Use classic. Some of the things people see as being slow are actually part of the animations of Aero. You can also tweak for how fast the animations play or to turn them off.

Go to control panel, performance information and tools, then adjust visual effects.
Turning off a lot of that stuff makes it much faster.

For mine I set it to custom and turned off anything in Aero that starts with fade, slide or animate. It looks pretty but I don't need it and actually get tired of it after awhile.

i was *thinking* about iconcache issue, but it turns out it the icon cache is fine. I tweaked and experiimented a bit, cleared the icon cache and also increased it. Same thing. The icons come up instantly anyway.

Its like that the control panel windows comes up, but its empty. Then it takes roughly 1.8 secs..and then ALL icons appear, instantly. Otherwise the icons would come up slower, one after the other, but this is not the case.

Also..as in regards to aero...well booting on the FRESH partition i use the same hardware and everything (go figure)...and there is NO delay.

Needless to say with a GTX275 there is no need to turn down graphics options - on the FRESH partition basically i have the same settings/effects...actually more.

I am still sitting on this also if the problem is solved on the fresh install - but i want to KNOW what exactly the reason for this is....also in regards to know what's going on. I do think i am pretty savvy when it comes to Vista/W7, i dont do stupid things like disabling beneficial services....and according to logic W7/Vista should NOT slow down, regardless of the number of programs installed and regardless of the size of the registry.

From that point of view...there is a potential the same problem appears further down the road, just install many, many programs on a fresh W7...and then the same issues re-appears? That's why i want to know what exactly causes this delay.

The problem is that using tools like process monitor and also windows performance toolkit does not REALLY give a clue. I see roughly twice as much registry accesses on the old W7 as opposed to the new one....but still this does not legitimate an almost 2 second delay. 28.0000 registry accesses happen on the new one, 44.000 on the old one. Need to do more testing with the Windows Perf, Toolkit. Right now i am re-installing everything i need onto the new W7 - Control Panel is still instant.
