Windows 7: If you click on "Start" and then "Control Panel"...

In W7, Click on Start and then (to the right, in the little menu) on "Control Panel".

Here it takes roughly 2 secs until my Control Panel (Large Icons) is up.

This on a quad core at 3.6Ghz, 4GB with two Hitachi 500GB SataII drives, system heavily optimized, defragmented etc...

How long does it take you?

It is instant for me on. What do you mean your system is heavily optimized? Just the hardware or have you tried tweaking Windows?

well hardware pushed to the limits, tweaked windows, defragment frequently.
Are you sure its instant? Make sure the window is not already open otherwise it will be instant since it would only put the window in the foreground.

edit: You testing on Vista or W7?

Pretty sure they know to do that.

My guess is that your "Tweaks" are breaking things. W7 does good job of keeping itself quick, the more crap you put on your computer to speed things up, the slower it will feel.

The only other culprit will be your AV software.

well i did some tracing with windows performance tools from the SDK.

This is the scenario:

I click on "control panel", then the window pops up with "adjust your computer's settings", but the window is still empty. But for the whole Control Panel to be displayed it takes two seconds. Just want to make sure we're on the same level 🙂

According to the performance tools what takes the time is actually going through the registry, it reads several thousands of entries in the registry..this is what takes all the time. Otherwise there is no disk io or other acitvity. But..this is very interesting. I might be on to something. Probably would need a full re-install. I guess the upgrade installs and all that made my system really bloated and it severely suffers in terms of snappines and how responsive it is.

So i guess i will put a virgin W7 on the other partition and go from there....

I run with my control panel as a menu. Much faster that way.
Same here, but it still takes a bit to load. Probably 2 to 3 seconds. You'll see it cascade down the list as it loads each item.

More or less instant - however - I do not access CP that way. It is an icon on the desktop. The result is a better window in three columns instead of a vertical laundry list.

Same thing here. Doesn't take as long as Vista did, but still a few seconds.

Almost instant. If I try I can make it with the cursor to the space CP window will show up. But usually it shows up before the cursor gets there 😛 Win7 x64 RC

I can only take a guess like software installed, drivers or maybe overclock?

i am on a fresh W7 right now, and of course it's instant.

My problem is that i upgraded several times vista -> W7 betas and that i have a LOT of apps on my PC.

I also noticed that i have less other problems now on the fresh install, eg. now i see Nvidia control panel if i right click on desktop...and perfectdisk boottime defrag works also which didnt work before.

As for my overclocks..they're always rock stable and tested, otherwise i wouldnt do it.

From that point of view, people think twice when you want to UPGRADE Vista ----> W7 and probably some betas in between. I know re-installing programs is a bitch...but it might be worth it in the long run. Much snappier system now.

Can't beat a good old clean install, anyway glad you got it sorted now reduce your future bloatware 😉.

Win 7 64 bit sorry haven't updated my sig yet. The control panel on computers where I work running Vista does take a few seconds to load but those pcs are heavily bogged down.
