Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 is crashing on me. It happened last night and again this afternoon. I have a couple files under c:\windows\minidump. I don't know how to open them. Windows suggested asking the web and that took me to MS. They didn't know.

I tried using Notepad, but that failed as well. The files have an extension of .dmp. Even if I could open them, I don't know if I could understand well enough to act.

I was in msconfig.exe the other day. I might have touched something there. I remember seeing Microsoft Filewall with a checkmark and it said status stopped. Because I use Nortons NIS, I believe I unchecked it. Then thinking about it, I put the check back and the status, I believe, said stopped. I just did a review of msconfig, and it say the status of Microsoft Firewall is running.

The only other changes that I remember making were to Startup. I unclicked PureSych and AdobeReader.

Suggestions?

Thanks Jack.

I downloaded the zip file and ran the executable. It reports that my problem from both crashes is usbhub.sys. This dll was installed a year back with a fresh copy of Windows 7. It has never updated. These two crashes are the first that I can remember since that time.

From search of usbhub.sys on my pc gave me DxDiag.txt.

I haven't seen a crash in 2 days.

From Blue ScreenView (numbers like 00000008 are reported parameters).

So now that the problem is identified. I'm trying to think why this might be happening now. Two recent software installs are Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Free Version so it is freestanding) and Puresynch, which I'm trying out for backups to a flash drive.
